Imagine, the holiday season is just about to start. You are on the way home to recover and enjoy the holidays with the family. The radio sings carols just interrupted by traffic and weather reports. It is wet and cold outside making you uncertain whether the streets are slippery or not. Ice on roadways, especially black ice, can create a hazard even for the most experienced drivers. Wouldn’t it be great if there would be a warning system informing you on critical road conditions?
A solution could be provided by smart warning systems equipped with ice detection sensors, capturing the temperature and humidity of roads. After detection, a warning signal will be sent to a Smartphone App or Navigation System and maybe also to reflector post activating a flashing signal to warn approaching car drivers to adjust the speed.
What is the benefit of doing this with NarrowBand-IoT (NB-IoT)? The main benefits are low device and maintenance costs as well as an extended coverage, enabling the installation of a cost-efficient and dense sensor system also in rural areas.
NB-IoT warning systems on critical road conditions are still future visions, but might help some day to protect the life and to increase travel comfort.
