Have you ever wondered, how we are able to fly to Mars but still have to worry if there is oncoming traffic on a winding, hilly road, why we need to wait ages for a doctor’s appointment to get initial answers on medical conditions or even just where we put our wallet?

What if a reflector post could send out warn signals on oncoming traffic? Or if there would be devices that could measure your medical condition and send it to a place where it could be analyzed and interpreted? Or if your wallet could post its position frequently to your mobile?

There are a lot of visionary ideas and they can become reality with access to information made available by smart devices connected to the Internet. The requirements of such devices towards communication technology are very similar:

• They have to be able to operate many years on a single battery or even live from energy harvesting.
• They have to be reachable in any country of the world through a reliable and secure network which is capable of handling the coexistence of massive amount of devices.
• They have to also be reachable in challenging areas like basements, tunnels and remote rural areas.

To meet this, the IoT market needs access to reliable Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) enabled by highly optimized and easy to integrate communication solutions.

Transport and Logistics

Logistic processes are complex and expensive. The aim of smart logistic applications is to optimize the movement of goods. Intelligent containers and packages monitor status, location and the condition of goods. This results in better quality of deliveries, reduced storage space, less traffic, pollution and costs and ensures that on Christmas eve every parcel reaches the correct person.

Smart transport and logistic devices have to be robust, energy efficient and reachable everywhere.

Agriculture

Smart devices in agriculture help to conserve our natural resources and to support for a bountiful harvest. Cameras in unmanned aerial vehicles identify weeds based on leaf shapes and enable a selective usage of herbicides. Sensors measure soil conditions such as moisture and nutrients. Combined with data from weather forecasts and climate it is the basis for more conscious usage of water and manure, also for next year’s planning.

Automated replenishment services take care of reordering physical goods as soon as supplies are running low. Therefore consumers do not have to worry to run out of essential products.

Smart devices for retail have to be reachable and simple to handle.

A dream of all humans is to retain mobility in addition to mental and physical activity till in old age. To longer carry the life in our hands and live in our own environment, smart devices can support. They provide assistance for people with constraint mobility, observe ground floors on spills or monitor health data and trigger emergency alert in critical situations.

Smart health care devices have to work reliable and secure without maintenance need.

Farming

Smart applications in farming make the life of cattle and farmer more comfortable and farming processes efficient. Conditions in the cowshed like temperature and ventilation can be measured and adjusted automatically. The health status of dairy cows can be monitored.
